Choosing Excellence: A Call to Higher Standards

In the world we live in, there are so many things vying for our attention. With so many areas we could spend our time and attention on, it is important to consider the question: how will I spend the hours my God has given me? Philippians 4:8 reads, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” This is a much higher standard than the world follows. We have an important choice to decide. Will we follow the standards of the world, pursuing pleasure, or will we pursue the higher standard of excellence God calls us to?

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. – Philippians 4:8

And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”Jos 24:15
